Does CBD Oil Expire? Shelf Life, Storage & Freshness Tips
You finally found that half-used bottle of CBD oil you've been looking for, but now you’re wondering: does CBD oil expire? Yes, CBD oil expires, but the hemp extract itself is very shelf stable. Treadwell Farms extracts have a three-year shelf life, and most of our gummies and topicals last two years. The best-by date on your label is your guide.
Whether you’re looking at a bottle you bought last year and misplaced or you're buying a few products at once and want to know how long they'll keep, this guide covers shelf life by format, storage in Florida heat, signs of spoilage, and how to safely stock up.
Does CBD Oil Go Bad? What Actually Happens Over Time
Even though CBD oil does go bad over time, the hemp extract actually holds its potency very well if stored properly. What changes over time is usually the ingredients around it: the carrier oil in extracts, the pectin in gummies, and the water-based ingredients in lotions and creams. Oxidation (which is air slowly breaking down an ingredient) and light do the most damage, and heat and moisture speed both along. We call them the enemies of every product we make.
In extracts, the main long-term risk is the MCT oil going rancid. We add carrier oil at the time of manufacture instead of pre-diluting extract in bulk, and we use organic, high-quality MCT oil. Both choices may lower the risk of rancidity.
Headspace (the empty space at the top of a bottle) plays a role too. The less air the bottle holds, the less oxygen is there to break down the oil.

How Long Does CBD Last? Shelf Life by Product Type
Does CBD expire on the same schedule for every product? No, because the shelf life of a CBD product varies based on other ingredients in the formula and exposure to elements over time such as heat, air, and light. Here's a quick reference for each product type, its shelf life, and the biggest factors that can impact its longevity:

Do CBD Tinctures and Extracts Expire?
Yes, and the shelf life of our CBD oils and extracts is three years. That covers Everyday Essential, Evening Blend, Citrus Spice, and Relief Extract (CBDa). The biggest long-term risk is rancid MCT oil, so keep an eye on the best-by date on your batch. Dark glass shields the oil from light, but make sure the cap is tight and wipe the dropper after use to limit air and residue from being introduced.
Do CBD Gummies Expire?
Yes, and our gummies have a two-year shelf life. As the natural pectin breaks down, they get softer, may stick together, and can turn a little oily. These texture changes have limited impact on the potency of the hemp extract in our full-spectrum CBD gummies.
We made that choice on purpose. Artificial preservatives would keep color and shape fixed, but we put natural ingredients and protecting the hemp extract itself ahead of appearance. Since we only use natural preservatives, our products, and particularly our gummies, are not like a Twinkie that will last forever. They will degrade, as natural things do, and you will see normal changes over time.
Any sign of mold means you should throw them out. To store CBD gummies, keep them in their original container in a cool, dry cabinet, well away from bathroom humidity.

Do CBD Topicals Expire? (Salves, Lotions, Roll-Ons)
Yes, CBD lotions and balms expire, and the base ingredient influences how long they last. Wax- and oil-based products last longest when kept cool and dark with limited air in the container: our salves last three years, while body oil and roll-ons last two. Water-based products, like our Relief Hydro Lotion and Rapid Relief Cream, last two years and do best in a cool, dry place. After opening, watch for changes in color, consistency, or smell. Topicals that ride along in a gym bag or car take the most abuse, so give your CBD topicals a secure spot for traveling.
Does Pet CBD Expire?
Yes. Pet CBD has the same three-year shelf life as our extracts, and the same storage rules apply: store in a cool, dark, place and keep it capped tight.
How to Store CBD Oil (and Everything Else) in Florida Heat
Florida’s heat and humidity can be tough on natural CBD products, but a few simple habits can help you keep them fresh:
-
Keep it cool and dark. A cabinet or drawer is ideal. Skip the windowsill and the spot near the stove.
-
Never leave it in a hot car. A parked car in Florida heats up fast and hastens product degradation.
-
Watch bathroom humidity. Shower steam is especially hard on gummies.
-
Limit air. Keep caps tight. For long-term storage of oils, the same tools people use to keep wine or olive oil from oxidizing can help.
-
Stay in the original packaging. It keeps the best-by date, batch number, and QR code with your product. If you do change containers, blocking UV light is as important as limiting air.
-
Bring summer packages inside promptly. We take extra steps when temperatures run extreme or shipping is delayed.
Refrigeration isn't necessary when products sit in a cool, dry place, though some customers like to chill their gummies. If you do refrigerate, keep them there consistently, since moving products back and forth between temperatures can speed up degradation.

How to Tell If Your CBD Has Gone Bad
Your senses are your best friend. Checking color, consistency, and smell is part of our own manufacturing process, and it works just as well at home. Before you use a product, give it a look and a sniff, then run through this quick-check guide to determine if your products are still fresh:
-
Extracts: A rancid or sharp smell, or a change in color or clarity.
-
Gummies: Softening and some oiliness come with age. Mold is a different story, and it means the gummies go in the trash.
-
Water-based topicals: Any change in color, consistency, or smell after opening.
Your label shows a best-by date, which is a quality guideline. If a product is past that date, check it with the signs above. We suggest using products before the date whenever you can, and throwing out anything with mold, a rancid smell, or any doubt. When in doubt, throw it out.

Stocking Up? How to Buy Ahead Without Wasting Product
Some customers are buying a bit ahead because of uncertainty around proposed federal hemp legislation. If you plan to do the same, here are some tips to keep your supply in good shape:
-
Match shelf life to your pace. Extracts and salves last three years, which makes them the easiest formats to buy ahead. Gummies, lotions, creams, body oil, and roll-ons last two years when properly stored.
-
Keep backups sealed. Store them cool and dark, and open one at a time.
-
Rotate your stock. Use the earliest best-by date first.
-
Reduce air exposure. Vacuum-seal backup gummy containers. If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, place gummies in a ziplock bag and push out all of the air before closing. For opened oils, a wine or olive oil preservation tool can limit oxygen.

FAQs About CBD Expiration
Do CBD gummies expire?
Yes, CBD gummies expire. Treadwell Farms full-spectrum CBD gummies have a two-year shelf life. As the natural pectin breaks down, they get softer and slightly oilier, with limited impact on the potency of the hemp extract.
Does CBD oil go bad if not refrigerated?
No, refrigeration isn't necessary when you store CBD oil in a cool, dark place. If you do choose to refrigerate, do it consistently, because moving products back and forth between temperatures can speed up degradation.
Does unopened CBD oil expire?

Once you open them for use, check them regularly for any changes in color, clarity, or smell. Treadwell Farms CBD oils and extracts have a three-year shelf life.
Can I use CBD after the best-by date?

Fresh From Our Farm to Your Shelf
CBD does expire, but the hemp extract itself is very shelf stable. Your best-by date and your senses are the best guides, and cool, dark, low-air storage keeps products fresh the longest. We use natural ingredients in every batch and provide a QR code that leads to each product’s lab results, so you can see exactly what you have and how long it will keep. That kind of openness comes naturally to a farm with a 100+ year farming legacy.
