Is CBD Safe for Cats?

Cats aren't just smaller versions of dogs when it comes to how their bodies handle CBD. Early pharmacokinetic research suggests cats absorb CBD more slowly and eliminate it more quickly than dogs do, which is part of why dosing guidance built for dogs shouldn't be assumed to carry over to cats.

Feline-specific CBD research is still developing, but it's encouraging so far. A controlled study published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery looked at CBD and THC in healthy cats and found them generally well tolerated, with only mild effects observed. It's a smaller and newer body of evidence than what exists for dogs, so it's reasonable to treat these findings as a promising starting point rather than the full picture.

The safest approach is the same one you'd use for any new supplement: start low, go slow, and check with your vet first. This is especially important if you have a kitten, a senior cat, or a cat currently taking other medications.

How Much CBD Should I Give My Cat?

CBD dosing for cats is based on their weight. For a 10 lb cat, the standard dose is 1-5mg (depending on the issue at hand), working up to 10mg if needed. Cats as small as 5 lbs would see a standard dose of about 1mg; cats weighing 15 lbs might need 5mg. We always recommend starting low at first and adjusting slowly as you see how your cat responds, so you might start with 1mg for any size cat and increase until you find the ideal dose.

You can give your cat CBD (once or twice daily) by dropping it directly in their mouth or onto a treat, or you can mix it into their food.
