Can CBD Help With Migraine Headaches?

Can CBD Help With Migraine Headaches?

Are you one of the 39 million Americans that suffer from migraines?

Migraine headaches are one of the most common health conditions and can last anywhere between four hours to three days for some sufferers. Symptoms of migraines can be debilitating and often include a pulsing or throbbing sensation which is usually on one side of the head. Nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound are also symptoms of a migraine, which for many can cause disruptions to daily tasks and work.

Pain medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may provide temporary relief, however, long-term use can lead to an increased risk of peptic ulcer disease, acute renal failure, and stroke. Some sufferers don’t experience relief from over-the-counter medication, which can lead to finding a natural remedy such as Cannabidiol (CBD).

Cannabinoids are the active compounds found in the cannabis plant and CBD is the second most common active ingredient and not to be confused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another type of cannabinoid. Unlike THC, CBD is non-intoxicating and does not cause a “high” sensation.

Effects of CBD on Migraine Headaches

A few lab studies found that CBD may help with acute and chronic pain because of how CBD impacts the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our ECS is the regulator and controller of many functions of our body including:

    • Sleep
    • Mood
    • Appetite
    • Memory
    • Overall balance

You can learn more about our ECS and how CBD works with your body here

Specifically, research has found that CBD may be able to provide migraine headache relief by:

    • Inhibiting receptors in the brain that control vomiting and pain
    • Blocking dopamine and reducing inflammation
    • Alleviating anxiety and stress, which are common triggers for migraine headaches
    • Promoting healthy sleep habits which may help prevent migraine headaches

If you’re new to CBD or a daily user, there are a variety of products to choose from and different ways to administer the product. Topicals and ingestibles may help provide relief differently and both may be used to help with headaches and migraines. CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that may help fight inflammation which is sometimes a trigger for migraines and headaches.

CBD Ingestibles for Headaches

CBD extracts may help provide full-body relief as opposed to topicals and other CBD products that are applied to specific areas for localized relief and treatment. Our three hemp extracts help you manage your dosage via the tincture dropper provided. The Evening Blend, Citrus Spice, and Essential Blend all come with a 1200mg high-potency and high-quality CBD formula and each has its own distinct characteristics and benefits that may be able to help with migraine headaches.

CBD Topicals for Headaches

CBD salve is one of many forms of CBD products that may help soothe nerves that are inflamed which ultimately provide relief. Our Warming Blend and Cooling Mint CBD Hemp Salves let you take care into your own hands and can provide relief by rubbing the salves on your temples.

Our Relief, Restore and Revive Roll-ons also have their own distinct benefits and ingredients and can help soothe pain and fight discomfort caused by migraines. Each roll-on has a special blend of essential oils that can be applied where it is needed most and ultimately provide aromatherapy benefits. The Relief Roll-On, includes an essential oil blend that includes peppermint specifically to help with headaches.

Whichever form of CBD product you use it is important to start with a low dosage and build from there.

Like all migraine and medical treatments, speak to your doctor first to get advice on proper dosages regarding CBD. It is important to listen to your body and adjust your dosage to meet your health needs and goals.
